 The World Congress of Mental Health 2017: A Report

The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) organised the World Congress of Mental Health and an International Conference for first time in the Asian region, at Ashok Hotel, New Delhi during 2-5 November 2017 with TNAI as professional partner.

Earlier, the Organising Chairperson, Dr Sunil Mittal and Dr NK Bohra of WFMH had invited TNAI to be a professional partner for the International Conference. In this context, TNAI held a meeting with Mental Health Nursing Experts from various institutes of Delhi with the Organising Chairperson of the Congress on 28 September 2017 and Ms Surekha Sama, Vice President, North Region, TNAI as chairperson. The TNAI contributed to successful conduct of the Congress/ Conference by inviting abstracts of papers, scientific paper presentation and poster presentation through its website, Facebook page and correspondence with nursing colleges conducting PG programme. Out of five papers received, three were selected for oral presentation and one for poster presentation and by the scrutinising committee.

The TNAI closely collaborated with the conduct of panel discussion and symposium on Role of Mental Health Nurse in Promotion of Mental Health and Prevention of Mental illness on 5 November 2017, moderated by Prof Dr Bimla Kapoor, Dean at ILFS Skill Health Academy & former Director of School of Health Sciences, IGNOU, New Delhi.

I. The following topics were taken up by the panelists.

·          Promotion of Mental Health by Dr Deepika C Khakha, faculty, College of Nursing, AIIMS.

·          Coping up with Stress by Mrs Bindu Shaiju, Asst Professor, College of Nursing, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi.

·          Early diagnosis and treatment - Strategies to Reduce Stigma  by Mrs Annie Kumar, faculty, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi.

·          Continuum of Care by Dr Mrs Raminder Kalra, Principal, Holy Family College of Nursing, New Delhi.

II. The Symposium on Emerging Need of Mental Health was moderated by Dr (Mrs) Raminder Kalra.

·       Child and Adolescent Mental Health by Ms Surekha Sama, Vice President, North Region.

·       Geriatric Mental Health by Mrs Veena Sharma, Associate Professor, faculty of Nursing, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi.

·       Prenatal and Postnatal Mental Health by Dr AT Kora, Nursing Superintendent, St Stephens Hospital, New Delhi.

III.  Liaisoning by Mrs Mitali Biswas, Head, Psychiatric Nursing Department, RAK College of Nursing New Delhi.

IV.  Substance Use Disorder by Dr Sumity Arora Tarafdar, Asst Professor, Holy Family College of Nursing, New Delhi.

Both these sessions were coordinated by Mr Ajinas AM and Mrs Vatchala Dhinakaran, Asst Secretaries at TNAI.
